Mercedes-AMG’s Electrifying Makeover: From V8 Roars to Hybrid Whispers

                                                                                    Mercedes-AMG GLC

Mercedes-AMG, the folks who usually shout “horsepower” instead of “hello,” are turning over a new, slightly greener leaf with the GLC63 and GLC43 Coupe. The latest models to grace their lineup have put the V8 engines on a temporary vacation and decided to go the eco-friendly route. But don’t worry, they haven’t gone full granola – yet.

The Shy Electrification

Picture this: the GLC43 and GLC63, known for their ear-splitting roars, have transformed into something…a bit less noisy. Instead of the growling V8s, they’ve got these 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines. You might wonder, have they gone soft? Not quite. These new engines have a pinch of hybrid technology – just enough to make even a leaf-loving Prius owner nod in approval.

The GLC43 4Matic Coupe now struts its stuff with an M139 2.0-liter inline-four petrol engine. But here’s the twist: it’s got larger turbochargers and a 48-volt mild hybrid system. There’s even a belt-driven starter generator thrown in. All this extra tech gives it a little more pep in its step, plus the AMG Performance 4Matic all-wheel-drive system to keep it grounded.

Now, the GLC63S E Performance Coupe is where things get electric – literally. It takes that M139 engine and adds a bigger turbocharger and a fancy integrated electric motor. But what’s really impressive is the 400-volt system powering that electric boost. You can almost hear Mother Nature clapping.

Numbers that Make You Grin

Okay, let’s talk numbers. The GLC43 Coupe struts around with 310 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque. It’s like the kid who got a bit more candy but still follows the rules.

Then there’s the GLC63, the big sibling. This one packs a punch with a jaw-dropping 500 kW and a thunderous 1,020 Nm of torque. If you’re not holding onto your hat, it might just fly off.

Now, the exciting part – speed. The GLC43 can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. But the GLC63 S is the real showstopper, doing the same sprint in an eye-watering 3.5 seconds. They’ve got power, and they want you to know it.

Electric Tech Wizardry

The GLC63 S adds an electric drive unit (EDU) to the mix, making it a P3 hybrid wonder. There’s an electric motor tucked at the rear axle with a two-speed transmission and a fancy electronically controlled limited-slip differential. If that sounds complicated, here’s the deal: the rear electric motor can power the front wheels when needed, creating an all-wheel-drive masterpiece. Plus, there’s a 6.1-kWh battery in there, so you can drive without a care in the world.

Luxury, Style, and a Dash of Fun

Step inside these electrified beauties, and you’re greeted with luxury. Nappa leather-wrapped AMG steering wheels and comfy seats dressed in Mercedes’ faux leather (but trust us, you won’t mind). For that extra pizzazz, you can get sport seats or seats with an AMG logo – because why not?

And for a little extra flair, Mercedes has a bunch of equipment packages. There’s the AMG Exterior Night package, AMG Night Package Exterior II (it’s so cool it needed two names), AMG optics package (just for the GLC43, it’s exclusive, you know), and the AMG Exterior Carbon Package. They’re like outfit choices for your car.

A Glimpse into the Electrified Future

With the GLC63 and GLC43, Mercedes-AMG is proving you can have power and a little less roar. While they’re ditching their iconic V8 engines for now, they’re ushering in a new era of performance without the thundering exhausts. We’ll have to wait for the pricing and specs, but one thing’s for sure – the future is getting greener, one electrified AMG at a time.

Disclaimer: No V8 engines were harmed in this electrifying transformation. Mercedes-AMG is taking a step towards an electric future, and they’re doing it with style and speed.
